Sister school BSA in Sports Extravaganza!

 football_tournament_032

What a fantastic day we had when our sister school, the British School of Alicante came to visit us! The day was planned to play a few football matches against each other but then turned into a sports extravaganza, with games of tennis and badminton being played between pupils from both schools. Children from both schools had a great time and had fun meeting pupils from the other school. The day ended with BSA winning one more game than King´s College, Murcia in the football but our students performed really well in the tennis and badminton games, winning the vast majority, to even out the scores overall.

It was certainly a superb day that allowed us to build the relationship between our two sets of pupils.

A big thank you to Mr Green and Mr Dexter and also all the pupils from BSA for making the day run so smoothly and so enjoyably.

Primary Basketball Thursday 19th January 2012

Another fantastic inter-house tournament to start off the year of 2012. It was a hard fought contest all the way through with close games between all the houses. Churchill overpowered a weakened Cervantes team in the first game winning by 14 points to 2. The second game of the tournament was much closer with Gaudi having a slight advantage in a 22 point thriller. In the second round of matches Gaudi took full advantage of the rule that meant if a year 3 pupil scored the points were doubled with all their 3 baskets being scored by year 3´s giving them a 12-0 win over Cervantes. Once again, in the second game of the day Newton came up short by 2 points, losing narrowly to Churchill 6-4. This meant that going into the last round of games the final was already decided with Churchill and Gaudi finishing in the top two places. So on Wednesday there was just pride to play for and the games once again did not disappoint. Cervantes claimed their first victory of the tournament with an impressive 12-6 win over Newton which had people thinking why they hadn’t performed like that all the way through the tournament. Gaudi then completed a romping 10-0 victory over their final opponents, making them clear favourites to claim the overall prize.

What a difference a day makes!!!!

Newton really turned on the style in the 3rd place play off and surged into a 20-0 lead at half time leaving Cervantes shell-shocked. Cervantes did improve in the second half but couldn’t fight back after what was an amazing first half display of shooting by Newton. Newton claimed third place with an impressive 26 – 4 victory.

The final was a very hard fought encounter with chances to win for either side. Churchill were playing like a different team to the one that lost to Gaudi only the day before and they raced into a 4 – 0 lead with baskets by talisman Pablo Perez. Gaudi pulled a basket back through Ben Howman-Murray, leaving them trailing by 4 points to 2 at half time. Inspirational half time team talks from their teachers Mrs Toomey and Mrs Rumistrzewicz meant the teams came out fighting in the second half. It was Gaudi that made the first impact with another basket by Ben Howman-Murray to bring the scores level. The game then went from end to end with neither team able to take advantage of some good court position and it was looking like another inter-house tournament would end in a shoot out. With only 90 seconds to go Pablo Perez popped up to score his third basket of the day giving Churchill the lead and sending a very noisy crowd through the roof. Gaudi were unable to hit back in such a short space of time, giving Churchill revenge for their defeat in the inter-house football tournament.

Well done Churchill!!!!

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the event and a big thank you to all the parents who attended the final for their continued support.

Another gorgeous December day at King´s College for one more football tournament: this time it was the U.12 Tournament, with two of our school teams entered.  Once again Mr Whitaker did a sterling job organizing and running the tournament (including the impressive feat of refereeing every match).  With two teams from our own school, two from Castelar, one from BSA and one from Marazul the tournament proved to be really competitive.  Once again King´s College, Murcia succumbed to a Castelar team in the final; this time by the narrow margin of 1-0.  Well done to a well organized and skilful Castelar team.  Thanks as always go to the Year 7s who helped out, all the parents who came to watch and the teams for competing in such a good spirit.  Most of all, though, thank you to Mr Whitaker for his fantastic administrative and organizational skills in making these enjoyable days possible.

Secondary Inter-House Basketball 2011

 basketball_fianl_045

What a fantastic inter-house basketball competition we enjoyed this last week. A very close fought competition with every house playing their part in a highly competitive competition. The qualifying stages came down to the last game with Cervantes needing Churchill to do them a favour by beating or drawing with Gaudi. This looked a possibility when Churchill drew level late in the second half and the Cervantes fans on the sideline could see their chance of a final spot getting closer. The quality of Gaudi then shone through with two quality baskets by their inspirational leader Sammy Klein and the final place was confirmed. It would be Gaudi versus Newton with Cervantes and Churchill playing it out for 3rd place.

Despite coming bottom of the league with no wins, Churchill had a surprising victory against a weakened Cervantes team to snatch 3rd place.

The final was a hard fought occasion with the lead going from one side to the other. Gaudi went into a 6-0 lead with some excellent basketball and rebounding from their senior players. Then Newton captain Matthew Marsden really took the game into his own hands and pushed Newton back into the game with a lovely assist and two lovely baskets, including a fantastic lay-up to draw the game level at half time. Newton then pushed on scoring another two baskets, making that 5 without reply, to take a commanding 10-6 lead. Gaudi then had to up their game and pulled two quick baskets back before the final whistle, leaving us with a draw and another inter-house shoot out to decide the winner.

Each member of the team was to have one shot from the free throw line. With a number of good efforts and near misses the game went into sudden death and Matthew Marsden scored the winning basket to take the title for Newton.

It was an excellent, hard fought competition with very interesting games throughout.

Well done everyone!

Under 10 Inter-School Football

Another great day at King’s College saw schools from all over the region attending the 3rd inter-school football tournament. It was a great day with the winter sun shining and a number of parents from different schools turning up to watch. The teams from Mar Azul, Castelar and two teams from the British School of Alicante and King’s College Murcia meant for a full, action-packed day of football. The games would be played over one 12 minute period.

The tournament was a close fought occasion with Castelar looking to be the stand out team and they easily made the final, but to play against whom? Going into the last game of the day, any one of three teams could join Castelar with King’s College Murcia United, Mar Azul and Kings College Alicante United in with a chance. With Mar Azul having played all their games they had to sit back and watch whilst KC Alicante United played KC Murcia United. The game ended 2-0 to KC Alicante United which meant they finished level on points with Mar Azul. After a quick count up of the goal difference it was confirmed that King’s College Alicante United had made the final by 4 goals, this news was met with big celebrations from our sister school.

The final was a close fought encounter with chances for either side. No team was able to find a goal in the 12 minutes so 6 minutes extra time would be played. Again, a very tight fought contest with few chances and the game and day was to be decided on penalties. After missing their opening penalty, Castelar fought back in the penalty shoot out to take the contest 3-1 on penalties.

It was an excellent day that was enjoyed by everyone. Congratulations to Castelar who claim the Under 10 title for the second time in a row.
